Late night doodle

Just a few lines on paper tonight.

Ready for the curb

Now that boxed up nicely; don't ya think?
The boy looks sad; cheer up pup, tomorrows another day!

Disaster Strikes again!

Now I'd like to say it wasn't my fault, but unfortunately it was. After I examined the reckage, I noticed where I trapped some air along his back and shoulder. The same area where the support rod was while I was building him. When that area blew out, everything else must have let go. One good thing was, I got very lucky and the kiln survived with no damage. Happier days hopefully will follow.

day 2

Late night doodle and a second trip to pick up some more granite.

granite for bases?

In my never ending pursuit to figure out what the heck I'm doing with my sculptures, I've traveled up to Ocala to pick through the dumpster of a granite place. I have hopes that if I surround myself with the right materials, I won't have to scratch my head so much; the answers will just jump out at me. I wanted to save so many more pieces from becoming land fill, but my jeep needs new shocks and probably some new springs and was sitting a little low in the water. So what the heck I'll just have to go back tomorrow and get some more.

More of my futile attempt to draw in a way that might actually make sense to me.

New work

I know, you've been asking yourself what's with these drawings? Well rest assured you're not alone. And if it makes you feel better here's a sculpture in progress. Working title is "In order to see more clearly"

Apparently I'm doing a drawing at the end of every night these days. And I guess I'm posting them too.

New work

Here's some more work in progress. A crazy piece called Three Wishes. And a page of some new bowls, that once fired will hopefully look really cool. The grey will be black after firing and glazing.

sketch for an etching and proof

My friend Ronny will be happy to know that I'm working on some etching plates, maybe I can get some done and head out to Texas and have a printing party. Here's a look at the sketch and a quick print to see what I scratched and burned. I figured I'd dive right in and try and tinker with some small plates to get my feet wet. By the way, I haven't done much etching before, and lately not much drawing. So be patient, I'm sure I'll get much better at this.

Katherine Butler Gallery Show opening

Ok, I took the liberty in photoshopping in the red dot, even though there wasn't one yet. We did leave early that night, so I'm sure it's there by now. I'd buy it. And the other post is the promo cards I put out at the show to try and increase my fan base. In search of more members like you.

Ok, I got a little side tracked but I'm back and here's mask #4.

Publicity prints

I've put together 4 pages to showcase the type of work I'm doing. I plan on using them in a mailer to contact galleries , so I can get my work spread around , so all you fans out there can buy yourself a one of a kind original piece of baked mud, made by yours truly.

Kiln Glazing

Another look at the before and after process in the kiln.

Things in boxes

Some work in progress. I'd like to do all sorts of different shadow type boxes for the masks I'm making and the reliefs I plan on doing.

Kiln vent

Ok, after much labored thought and research about how to vent my kiln without spending 3 to 4 hundred dollars, I've come up with this design. Simple and very very cheap! The fan I found at an electronics surplus store for $17.95 and I just had to try this telescoping dryer duct at $14.27 from lowes. I put a couple of legs to stablize it under the holes I drilled in the floor of kiln and hold it just far enough away to get enough fresh air to mix in with the kiln fumes. I'll be venting it out the side of the porch, to my wives dismay I'll have to cut a small hole. Now call me crazy, but I think it just might work. I'll be firing again soon so, cross your fingers.

Mask #2

Mask #2 looks a little evil, but I'm sure I'll feel the need to do some lighter masks sooner or later, maybe even something attractive.

Final destination

And here's a look at my mothers vase filled with cheerful flowers.

Mask Making

I've been meaning to do a series of masks for awhile now, I guess I've started. That's one down and hopefully I'll do at least ten.

Morning drawing

Just some wandering thoughts.

More lights

Light test. I thought the lights would light the figure from underneath in a dramatic way, but they don't seem to reach him up there. So I think he'll need a spot light on him to help with the theater.

Boopa!!!

One of my little helpers, who likes to take away my focus when I'm loading delicate green ware. Awe, but she's so cute!

more stuff

This vase, as you may have guessed is a present for my mother, and this is the card, front and back, I attached. I sent it off to the florist for something pretty to put in it, that can hopefully take some of the edge off of it.

And these are a couple of photoshopped pics, for the hell of it.

Kiln Fun

Here's a little before and after test. I'd like to do more of this, photographing throughout the process. I enjoy looking at it, I hope someone else out there does to.

Let there be light

Another take on base making. I love lighting my work, especially a piece like this, I think it helps with the emotion.

Bases need feet!

It's probably hard to tell from these shots, but this is just what my bases have been missing, I'll call them feet. I think it helps give them direction and also works with the story, composition, and balance. Don't worry once I sand em, finish em, and tweek em on a bit, you'll love em!

More pages

You would probably think I'm a bit tortured by looking at these two sculptures. But it's because of spending some time these sculptures that I'm not at all crazy in the head.

Disappointment

Just felt like slapping together a page for this sculpture after I photographed it. If your interested in reading a little about it, you can here at my website Disappointment.

Late night scribbles

I've been trying to make time to stop and get back to doing some of my over worked and over thought pen and ink drawings. But it always seems to be about 2 o'clock in the morning when I sit down to do one. By that time my brain is not capable of harnessing the many thoughts and ideas that are usual at hand. So silly scribbles is all I seem to do.
